Coltrane Changes — Full 12-Bar

Jazz4/41 vistas

Coltrane's harmonic substitution system applied to a 12-bar format. Each dominant chord is replaced by a secondary ii–V leading into a new tonal center a major third away. The result is dense chromatic harmony that outlines all 12 tones within a single chorus. This is distinct from Giant Steps in that it uses tritone substitution on top of the major-thirds cycle. The key skill is voice-leading: each chord must connect smoothly to the next. Jazz guitarists use close-position voicings so each note moves by step or stays common. The chromatic movement in the inner voices creates the illusion of constant motion even during long harmonic rhythms. Practice by playing just the top two strings of each voicing first. You will hear the chromatic line weaving through all 12 chords. Add bass notes once the line is internalized at full tempo.
