Giant Steps Changes in E♭
Inspired by John Coltrane's 1960 masterpiece, this progression cycles through three tonal centers a major third apart: E♭, G, and B. Each key gets its own ii–V–I before the next modulation arrives, leaving only one or two beats to land before the next key appears. The harmonic pace is brutal — chords change every two beats at up-tempo. The three tonal centers divide the octave into equal thirds, meaning no traditional "home key" dominates. Your ear must adapt instantly. Rhythm-guitar players typically comp with shell voicings (root–3rd–7th) to navigate the changes cleanly at speed. Start at 60 bpm and isolate each two-bar cycle before chaining them. When you can play all three cycles without hesitation, gradually raise the tempo. At 200+ bpm this progression will expose any harmonic weakness in your playing.
