Roots Reggae — Full Band Arrangement in Cm

Reggae4/40 views

Roots reggae in a minor key has a weight and gravity that major-key reggae lacks. Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry," "Redemption Song," and "Natural Mystic" all use minor keys with extended chord colors (minor 7ths, major 7ths, 9ths) to create that sense of deep, patient resolve. The guitarist in a reggae band is part of the rhythm section — the "skank" chord on the off-beat is as much a percussion instrument as a harmonic one. Advanced roots reggae requires you to master the "double stop skank" — playing chords with double stops (two-note voicings on the upper strings) instead of full six-string chords. Double stop skanks are brighter, more percussive, and cut through the heavy bass and drums better than full chord voicings. The classic double-stop positions use strings 1–2 or 2–3 with clean, sharp staccato attacks. This Cm progression also incorporates a "drop" section — a bar of only bass note and kick drum with no guitar chord — that creates the dynamic tension typical of live roots reggae performance.
